Why Barcelona is the #1 gap year destination

Barcelona brings together everything that makes a gap year meaningful, with the opportunity to teach, learn a new language, and experience a different culture.

🏫 TEFL demand is booming

Spain has over 10,000 private language academies and a government-backed bilingual schools programme placing thousands of native English speakers annually. A Trinity CertTESOL from Barcelona opens doors across Spain, Europe, and beyond — and most gap year students receive job offers before they leave.

💶 Affordable cost of living

Barcelona is significantly cheaper than London, Dublin, or New York for day-to-day living. Students typically spend €600–900 per month on food, transport, and social life — well within reach for most budgets, especially with accommodation already included in every program.

☀️ Lifestyle + culture

300 days of sunshine, world-class food, beaches 20 minutes from the city centre, and a social scene built around international students. Barcelona consistently ranks among Europe's top cities for quality of life — and learning Spanish here means picking up the language in the best possible environment.

Who takes a gap year in Spain?

Our programs attract students at different life stages, all looking for an experience that combines travel, learning, and real-world skills.

🎓

UK school leavers & uni deferral students

Many students take a gap year after A-levels or before starting university. A structured program gives you something concrete — a qualification, a language, real experience — to show on your UCAS or graduate CV.

🇺🇸

US students deferring college

A gap year before college is increasingly common in the US. Harvard actively encourages it. Our programs are structured enough to satisfy parents and universities, and the Trinity CertTESOL may qualify for college credit at many US institutions.

🌍

Recent graduates exploring options

A gap year after university is a powerful way to build skills before entering the job market. Teaching English in Spain is a legitimate career move — and one that looks impressive on any graduate application.

🇮🇪🇨🇦

Irish & Canadian students

Ireland and Canada have strong gap year cultures, and both countries produce students well-suited to a year in Barcelona. EU citizenship (for Irish students) makes the longer visa-free programs especially accessible.

Gap year Spain — frequently asked questions

Yes — US college credit is available as an optional add-on to any program. The Trinity CertTESOL is a Level 5 qualification recognised by universities worldwide, and many institutions accept it for academic credit transfer. We recommend contacting your university's academic registrar to confirm their specific requirements. The SIELE Spanish exam (included in the Semester and Double Semester programs) is also accepted by many institutions as evidence of language proficiency. Find out more on our college credit page →
Our structured gap year programs start from €3,300 all-inclusive for the 5-week Summer program, rising to €10,900 for the full 24-week Double Semester. Every program includes your Trinity CertTESOL course, intensive Spanish classes, accommodation, and a full calendar of cultural activities — so there are no nasty surprises. See our Dates & Fees page for a full breakdown.
EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa to study or live in Spain. Non-EU students (including those from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia) can stay in Spain for up to 90 days without a visa. For longer programs (Semester and Double Semester), a Spanish student visa is required — and we guide every non-EU student through the entire process, from documentation to your TIE appointment. Learn more on our Student Visas page.
Spain is one of the best gap year destinations in the world. Barcelona combines world-class culture, affordable living, outstanding weather, and a thriving international student community. Spain is the #1 TEFL destination in Europe with over 2,500 US and Canadian teaching assistants placed annually, and demand for qualified English teachers continues to grow. US student numbers in Spain jumped 26.6% in a single year — the fastest growth of any major study-abroad destination.
No prior Spanish is needed. All our Spanish language classes are grouped by level — from complete beginner (A0) upwards — and are taught by qualified native-speaker teachers at Iberia Language Academy. Many students arrive with zero Spanish and leave having passed the SIELE B1 or B2 exam.
Our gap year programs in Spain range from 5 weeks to 24 weeks. The Summer Program (5 weeks) is ideal if you want a structured introduction to teaching and Spanish before starting university. The Long Summer (10 weeks), Semester (12 weeks), and Double Semester (24 weeks) suit students wanting deeper language progress, work experience, or a longer immersion. All programs follow the same all-inclusive structure — the main differences are duration, Spanish level achieved, and the qualifications included.
For the vast majority of students, a structured gap year has no negative effect on university admission — and often strengthens an application. Harvard's admissions office has publicly encouraged gap years, and research shows that gap year students perform better academically and report higher satisfaction in their first year. 90% of gap year students return to university within a year. A recognised qualification like the Trinity CertTESOL demonstrates initiative and real-world achievement to admissions teams.
EU/EEA students can work freely in Spain during their gap year. Non-EU students on a student visa are generally permitted to work up to 20 hours per week alongside their studies. Many of our Double Semester students pick up part-time English teaching work at Iberia Language Academy or local academies before their program ends. Our team can advise on what's possible for your specific situation and nationality. Learn more on our Work Experience page.
Barcelona is one of Europe's safest major cities for international students. Like any large city, common-sense precautions apply — particularly around tourist areas and on the metro at night. We brief every student on arrival, place you in vetted accommodation in safe central neighbourhoods, and our coordination team is contactable throughout your stay. The vast majority of our students report feeling comfortable and at home within their first week.
More than most people expect. In 12 weeks of intensive daily classes at Iberia Language Academy — combined with living, shopping, socialising, and navigating Barcelona in Spanish — most students progress two full CEFR levels. A complete beginner (A0) typically reaches B1 conversational level by the end of the Semester program. Many go on to pass the SIELE B1 exam before they leave. Immersion is the single most effective environment for language acquisition, and Barcelona provides it 24 hours a day.

An unforgettable experience

Over 100 students a year leave Barcelona with a qualification, conversational Spanish, and a whole new perspective.

★★★★★

"The best decision I ever made before starting university. I arrived knowing zero Spanish and left after six months genuinely fluent. The TEFL qualification opened doors I didn't even know existed."

"I spent six months in Barcelona before my degree. I got a new qualification, learned Spanish, made lifelong friends and got a part-time teaching job before I left. Honestly more valuable than most university courses!"
